I seek connection in my practice.
My current work is primarily created from direct observation. I take my easel outside along the coast of Maine during all seasons—into the woods, into boat shops, to my mechanic’s parking lot, to a friend’s house. I’m keen to notice what draws my attention, and to explore my connection to place and to my community.
Painting from life allows me to be an active participant in real time. Changing conditions force me to hone my craft so that I may work quickly and instinctively.
I am compelled to create in this direct way because it brings me outside, into nature, into to my community. I meet and engage with people and environments wherever I paint. It reminds me that I am in and of this beautiful world.
